Scientific name: Calacarus carinatus (Purple mite)
Acaphylla steinwedeni (Orange mite)
Tetranychus urticae (Yellow spider)
Panonychus ulmi (Red spider)
Species affected:
  • Calacarus carinatus, Camellia spp. Viburnum spp. Spatyphylum spp.
  • Acaphylla steinwedini: Camellia.
  • Tetranychus urticae, Panonychus ulmi: Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus ulmi: both are polyphagous, but T. urticae attacks mostly grass species (crops, ornamentals and wild species), Panonychus ulmi shows preference for woody species.
Cultural measures: Apply balanced fertilizers, avoiding excess nitrogen.
Chemical application: Once mite colonies are detected, chemicals such as summer oil, amitraz, sulphur, dicofol, diazinon, propargite, tebuphenpyrad or fenazaquin¹ can be applied.

Note: Phytoseiids are natural enemies of phytophagous mites. The fact that some of these beneficial mites can be found naturally on camellia plants should be considered when applying a chemical. Moreover, some species are produced artificially, i. e. Phytoseiulus persimilis which is efficient against T. urticae..
